Pietra Dura Plaque, Italy, c.1900

Pietra Dura, literally “hard stone” in Italian, is the technique of using small, exquisitely cut and fitted, highly-polished colored stones to create what amounts to a painting in stone. This framed piece was created in Florence, and depicts a mosquito in malachite, lapis, and mother of pearl with a travertine marble background. Excellent condition with no losses and no chips.
