Satsuma Stick Vase, Japan, c.1850

One of the early Satsuma designs, known as the 1000 face pattern, dating from the late Edo period. The pattern depicts the wise men or elders of the city, some with gold halos to show reverence. There is some normal wear to the gilding, but no damage or repairs.
